How To Measure Foot Size

5 Steps on How to Measure foot size | Best Practice to take measurement of foot & benefices

Follow these simple instructions to measure your feet and define what is your foot size (foot length and foot width), then refer to the Size guides and size chart provided by Latin Dance Shoes Australia (or the shoe shop company) to determine which shoe size is best for you.

how to measure shoe size

The term “foot size” refers to the measurement or dimension of a person’s foot (define as the lower extremity of the leg below the ankle, on which a person stands, walks or dance). It is calculated by the length of the foot from the heel to the tip of the longest toe. Foot size commonly refer to the length of the foot but can also refer to the width of the foot.

In order to measure your foot size, we use a measurement system based on ascertaining your foot length in centimetres (referred as “cm”) and determine your foot size by finding the equivalent in the shoe size chart. You can then use a shoe size conversion system in order to obtain the equivalent of US shoe size to AUS, or US size to AUS shoes, EU shoe Size to AUS and more to ensure the proper shoe fit.

Learning how to measure foot size accurately brings several key benefits backed by scientific principles and researches. In fact, a 2018 Study from the Journal of foot and Ankle Research find that between 63% and 72% of individuals were wearing shoes that fit improperly and does not accomodate their foot’s width or length dimensions.

However, scientific studies shows that precise foot measurements aid in selecting footwear that provides proper fit and support, minimizing the risk of discomfort, pain, and foot-related issues. By understanding the anatomical features of the foot, such as the length, width, arch height, and toe alignment, individuals (Men, Women and kids) can identify their unique foot characteristics and make informed choices when purchasing shoes.

Additionally, accurate foot measurements contribute to the optimization of biomechanics, ensuring that weight distribution, gait mechanics, and overall foot function are well-supported. This promotes better alignment, stability, and efficient movement, reducing the likelihood of injuries and enhancing overall foot health and performance.

So if you as well experienced pain and discomfort (buying the wrong shoe size and hated the experience) or bought shoes online but they weren’t the right shoe size which ended up costing you extra money and time (as well as having to deal with some negative emotions!), then follow our guide bellow. These easy 5 steps and simple instructions will help you ascertain your foot size, foot length and foot width and express in cm their numerical value. You can then convert those cm in inches using a shoe conversion table by referring to our size chart and buy your new footwear with a total peace of mind!

1- Place the piece of Paper and Heel Against the wall

shoe sizing

Place the piece of paper on the floor and against a wall to start the process of how to measure your foot. Then remove any shoes or socks and place the back of your heel against the wall as well on top of the blank piece of paper.

2- Trace the outline of your foot using a pen or pencil to measure foot size

how to measure foot size

Then trace the outline of your foot using a pen or pencil to measure foot size. Make sure not to trace it too close to your foot (underneath it) or you might actually draw it too small. It is always safer to draw it slightly bigger than what it is. You don’t need to draw in between toes. Simply draw the outline up to toe longer toe and the further end of your toe.

3- Remove your foot from the piece of paper and calculate the size of foot by measuring the outline from the heel to the longest toe using a ruler or meter.

shoe size measurement

Remove your foot from the  piece of paper and measure the distance between the longest toe (for example the tip of the big toe) to the outermost part of the heel. This distance represent the length of your foot. For a more accurate measurement, use a ruler in centimetres, rather Han inches to calculate the size of foot.

4- Convert Your foot length using a shoe size chart to calculate your shoe size

shoe size

Once you obtain your foot length in cm, simply refer to the size chart (Shoe Chart bellow for men, women and kids).

5- Repeat the same process for the other foot and refer to the foot size chart

Repeat the same process for the other foot. We all have one foot longer and bigger than the other. We need to determine which one is the longest. It will then be your foot size of reference  when analysing and comparing any sizing chart.

Tips on Shoe Size Measurements

Here are our 7 best tips on shoe size measurements listed bellow.

1 – Always measure your foot and execute this foot size measurement process on a flat and hard surface.

2- One foot is always longer and bigger than the other. Make sure to draw them both, and keep only the longest foot size as reference when referring to the shoe size chart.

3- Always pick the size up more than the size down.

Example:

Your foot is 26,4cm long and fall in between sizes
26,2cm is a Size 40 EUR and size 9.5 US

26,6cm foot length is a size 41 EUR and US 10

In this case, you want to choose a size 41 EUR (Or US10)

4- Never buy a shoe based on size assumption. Always measure your feet before buying a shoe online. When you go physically in a shop, you might feel the difference (if it feels right or not). But when purchasing shoes online, you would want to measure everything.

5- Measure at the end of the day: Feet tend to swell throughout the day, so it’s best to measure your shoe size towards the end of the day when your feet are at their largest

6- Stand while measuring: To get an accurate measurement, stand up straight and distribute your weight evenly on both feet. This will provide a more realistic representation of your foot size when you’re standing or walking

7- Consider width: In addition to length, foot width is an important factor in finding the right fit. Measure the widest part of your foot to determine your foot width. Some shoe brands offer different width options to accommodate various foot widths.

5 tips to helps kids find the right shoe size

When it comes to helping kids find the right shoe size, here are 5 useful tips listed bellow.

  • Observe how the kid and children move, exercise, walk or run. If you notice that your children is loosing balance more than usual while doing random movement, that is a sign that the shoe is ill-fitting your kid’s feet.
  • Measure their feet regularly: Kids’ feet can grow quickly, so it’s important to measure their feet regularly, ideally every few months. This will ensure that they are wearing shoes that fit properly and comfortably.
  • Measure both feet: Just like adults, kids’ feet can have slight differences in size. Measure both of their feet and use the measurement of the larger foot as a reference for choosing the correct shoe size.
  • Consider growth room: Kids’ shoes should have a little extra space for growth, typically around half an inch (about a thumb’s width) between the longest toe and the front of the shoe. This allows room for their feet to grow without causing discomfort.
  • Make your child stand and pressure with your thumb at the front  of your kid’s shoe. You should have enough to press into nothing. If you have more than one thumb space, that means your kid’s shoe is too big. However, if you feel that their toe is right on the toe box, that means the shoe is too small.

What the difference between mens and womens foot length shoe size?

The main difference between men’s and women’s shoe sizes is the length-to-width ratio. Men’s shoes are designed with a wider width compared to women’s shoes of the same length. Additionally, men’s shoe sizes tend to start at a higher numerical value than women’s shoe sizes. This is because men’s feet are typically larger on average than women’s feet. So, even if the foot is measured and quantified in centimetres, which is a universal unit of measure, the sizing chart will differ from gender.

Determine foot width by referring to the foot width chart bellow

Are all size chart feet the same?

6 Factors that Affect how your shoe fits

The fit of a shoe can be influenced by various factors. Here are Six key factors listed bellow that affect how a shoe fits.

1. Foot Size and Shape: The size and shape of your feet play a significant role in how a shoe fits. Everyone’s feet are unique, and factors like length, width, arch height, and toe shape can impact the fit. Some shoes are designed for narrow feet, while others cater to wider feet or specific foot shapes like high arches or bunions.

2. Shoe Last: The shoe last refers to the mold or shape around which a shoe is constructed. Different shoe lasts have different contours and dimensions, affecting how the shoe fits. Shoe lasts can be designed for specific foot types or styles, such as athletic shoes, dress shoes, or casual footwear.

3. Material and Construction: The materials used in making a shoe, as well as its construction, can affect the fit. Flexible and stretchy materials like mesh or knit uppers tend to provide a more adaptable fit. Additionally, the presence of overlays, seams, and stitching can impact the overall comfort and fit of the shoe.

4. Closure Systems: The closure system of a shoe, such as laces, straps, zippers, or buckles, can significantly impact the fit. Different closure systems offer varying levels of adjustability and support. For example, laces allow for personalized tightening or loosening, while straps provide a secure fit.

5. Sock Choice: The type of socks you wear with your shoes can also affect the fit. Thick or cushioned socks can take up more space inside the shoe, potentially making it feel tighter. Conversely, thin or no-show socks may create more room, leading to a looser fit. It’s essential to consider your preferred sock thickness when trying on and fitting shoes.

6. The purpose of the shoe: Is the intended purpose of the shoe is to go out running, playing soccer, playing basketball, or to go out dancing? All of them have a different shoe structure depending on the intended purpose. Define the purpose of the shoe first, then refer to specialised brands for each activities. 6 signs you are wearing the wrong shoe size

Wearing the wrong shoe size can lead to discomfort, pain, and potential foot problems. Here are six signs listed bellow that indicate you are wearing the wrong shoe size.

1. Toe Discomfort: If your toes feel cramped, squished, or pressed against the front of the shoe, it’s a clear indication that your shoes are too small. You may experience pain, numbness, or develop blisters and calluses on your toes. My personal experience is that when I buy the song shoe size, I experience irritation on the edge of my big toe and sometimes pinky toe. And I am forced to not wear them anymore.

2. Heel Slippage: If your heels constantly slip out of the shoes while walking, it could be a sign that your shoes are too big. If Your heels and ankles feel irritated, it is definitely a sign that you are wearing the wrong shoe size. This can cause instability, blisters, and rubbing against the back of your heel, leading to discomfort and potential injuries.

3. Pain and Soreness: Wearing the wrong shoe size can cause general foot pain and soreness. If you frequently experience discomfort in the arches, balls of your feet, or other areas, it may be due to improper shoe sizing.

4. Foot Numbness or Tingling: If you feel tingling or numbness in your feet while wearing shoes, it could be a sign that the shoes are too tight, constricting proper blood circulation. This can lead to nerve compression and discomfort.

5. Blisters and Calluses: Ill-fitting shoes can cause friction and rubbing against your skin, leading to the formation of blisters or calluses. If you consistently develop these on your feet, it suggests that your shoes are not the right size for you.

6. Discomfort due to the position of the shoe’s arch: When wearing ill-fitting shoes, the position of the shoe’s arch can be problematic. If the shoe is too large, the arch may sit too near your heel, while in a shoe that is too small, the arch might end up too close to the ball of your foot.

It’s essential to ensure you have the correct shoe size to maintain foot health and overall comfort. If you experience any of these signs, consider getting a professional fitting or trying different sizes to find the right fit for your feet.
